All Aboard! The Railroad Comes to Berkeley Springs
Imagine arriving in Berkeley Springs by train! On November 1, 1888, the first train steamed into town, opening a new chapter in the history of this popular resort community. The railroad made travel easier for visitors coming to enjoy the famous healing springs and helped local businesses ship their goods to markets beyond the mountains.
The handsome brick depot you see today was built in 1915, replacing the original wooden station. Passenger service ended in 1935, but the depot remains an enduring reminder of an era when the arrival of the train connected Berkeley Springs to a much bigger world.
